| Mac and Me |
[Jun. 29th, 2008|11:32 pm] |
I so need to see this:
It's all one big McDonald's ad, although you can't tell from the trailer. However, dig this dance scene in a McDonald's.

| Uncombed hair! Weird music! A girl smoking a pipe! |
[Mar. 17th, 2008|05:35 pm] |
Phyllis Schlafly is appalled at the state of affairs represented in Juno:
America is in bad shape if the financial success of this movie reflects today's high school culture: sexual activity without marriage, crude pictures on the walls, vulgar language, a girl smoking a pipe, unattractive clothes, uncombed hair, enjoyment of slasher movies and weird music, and marriage breakup.
It's like Sheriff Bell says in No Country For Old Men: "It starts when you begin to overlook uncombed hair. Anytime you quit seein' the comb an' brush, the end is pretty much in sight." |

| I love Roger |
[Jan. 12th, 2008|12:46 am] |
Roger Ebert never forgets to be an actual person watching a movie. From his review of "The Bucket List":
The movie, directed by Rob Reiner, was written by Justin Zackham, who must be very optimistic indeed if he doesn't know that there is nothing like a serious illness to bring you to the end of sitcom cliches. I've never had chemo, as Edward and Carter must endure, but I have had cancer, and believe me, during convalescence after surgery the last item on your bucket list is climbing a Himalaya. Your list is more likely to be topped by keeping down a full meal, having a triumphant bowel movement, keeping your energy up in the afternoon, letting your loved ones know you love them, and convincing the doc your reports of pain are real and not merely disguising your desire to become a drug addict. To be sure, the movie includes plenty of details about discomfort in the toilet, but they're put on hold once the trots are replaced by the globe-trotting.

| Children of Men |
[Jan. 7th, 2007|10:15 pm] |
"Children of Men" is tremendous. Well worth seeing, and one of those "god DAMN that movie is well done" kind of movies. Plus, best Pink Floyd reference I've seen. I'm gonna go see it again. |

| Godfather Part II |
[Aug. 26th, 2006|10:12 am] |
I finally saw The Godfather Part II last night. It was good, of course, although I'm not sure it's better than the first as everyone says.
I have a question that is also a spoiler, so I put it in the comments. |

| Netflix friends |

Amy and I re-signed up for Netflix. Anyone out there have an account I can add as a friend? |

| Ads in movies |
[Aug. 30th, 2005|10:02 am] |
I hate them. I hate the pre-show ads. I hate having five minutes of
cell phone and Coke commercials before the movie. I hate the movie ads
pretending to be "behind the scenes of the making of..." mini-shows.
Movie previews are fun, but watching the Japanese scientists sing "Close
To You" for the 100th time is the worst.
There's been a fair amount of media buzz lately about upscale theaters
with fancy food and bars and so on, charging a premium ticket price.
I'll stick with my popcorn and soda, but this does give me an idea.
I'll tell you right now, theater owners: I WILL PAY A PREMIUM TO NOT
WATCH ADS BEFORE THE MOVIE. I'll pay enough to cover your lost revenuefrom Coca-Cola. If there were two theaters, and one was, say, a $9
ticket and one was $12, but had no ads, I would go to the $12 theater
EVERY SINGLE TIME.
(Note: I also mailed this to Roger Ebert. I'm hoping he'll publish it in his Ask The Answer Man column.) |

| Mandatory geek movie |
[Aug. 29th, 2005|10:27 am] |
All geeks, especially geek boys, need to go see "The 40-year-old Virgin". It's the best geek movie I've seen in so long.
It's laugh-out-loud funny for most of it, but it beautifully and accurately (painfully) captures geekiness that we've all been through, without being insulting. I need to see it again just to enjoy the interior shots of Andy's apartment.
And yes, his name is Andy.
"You know how I know you're gay? You like Coldplay." |

| Land Of The Dead: Stinky |
[Jul. 2nd, 2005|10:33 pm] |
Just got back from seeing Land Of The Dead. Big disappointment. Not exciting, not scary, hokier than one would expect. |
